Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
